Kahuku

The Monarch butterfly is called Kahuku in Maori. This gorgeous, iconic butterfly is famous for a long annual migration across the South Pacific. Kahuku seemed an appropriate title while we were creating this ambitious show, launching our giant butterfly stilt-dancers up-up-up and away into the air. Working with David Clarkson (Stalker theatre) we combined stilts, slings, costumes and later a crane to hang the aerial dancers off. Adding an original soundtrack by Leyton, the show KAHUKU had a surprisingly robust tour history. We started in Wellington and Porirua, and were then invited to the Cairns Arts Festival (for an artist residency). We created the show with two full casts, performing in Sydney and Hamilton. Everywhere we went, people responded to the beauty of the Kahuku butterfly soaring through the air.

Pure magic!
